Advanced Math practice question
A garden bed has an area of 3x² + 6x square metres and a width of 3x metres, where x > 0. What is its length, in metres, when x = 7?
Answer: 9
Length = (3x² + 6x)/(3x) = x + 2. At x = 7, the length is 9. (Check: area 189 ÷ width 21 = 9.)
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 13
- 13 comes from x + 6, forgetting to divide the 6x by 3x properly (6x/3x = 2).
- If you answered 21
- 21 is the width at x = 7.
- If you answered 189
- 189 is the area at x = 7.
