AlgebraHardTwo-part order from a total and a difference

Algebra practice question

A florist sold roses at $5 each and tulips at $3 each. In one order, the number of roses was 4 more than the number of tulips, and the order cost $52. How many roses were in the order?

Answer: 8

With t tulips and t + 4 roses: 5(t + 4) + 3t = 52 gives 8t = 32, so t = 4 and there were 8 roses.

Common wrong answers

If you answered 4
4 is the number of tulips.
If you answered 6
6 solves 5r + 3r = 52 with the difference ignored, then rounds.
If you answered 12
12 adds 4 to the tulip count twice.
