AlgebraHardMinimum sales to reach a target
Algebra practice question
A school play sells adult tickets for $10 and child tickets for $6. Twenty adult tickets have been sold, and the school needs at least $300 in total ticket sales. What is the least number of child tickets that must be sold?
Answer: 17
Adult sales: 20 × 10 = $200. Need 200 + 6c ≥ 300, so 6c ≥ 100 and c ≥ 16.67. Tickets are whole, so at least 17 (giving $302).
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 16
- 16 child tickets give 200 + 96 = $296, short of $300.
- If you answered 30
- 30 is 300/10, as if the remaining tickets were adult tickets.
- If you answered 50
- 50 is 300/6, ignoring the $200 already raised from adults.
