AlgebraHardWorking back from a known value at a constant rate
Algebra practice question
Each time x increases by 1, the linear function g decreases by 4. If g(3) = 10, what is the value of g(0)?
Answer: 22
Going from x = 3 back to x = 0 is three steps of decrease, so g increases by 4 × 3 = 12 going backwards: g(0) = 10 + 12 = 22.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 6
- 6 is 10 − 4, one step in the wrong direction.
- If you answered 14
- 14 is 10 + 4, only one of the three steps.
- If you answered -2
- −2 subtracts 12 instead of adding: moving to a SMALLER x reverses the decrease.
