AlgebraMediumOvertime rate from a week's pay

Algebra practice question

A worker is paid $14 per hour for the first 40 hours in a week and a higher rate for each hour beyond 40. In a week of 45 hours the worker was paid $665. What is the overtime rate, in dollars per hour?

Answer: 21

40 × 14 = 560 for the regular hours, leaving 665 − 560 = 105 for 5 overtime hours: 105 ÷ 5 = 21.

Common wrong answers

If you answered 7
7 is 21 − 14, the extra per overtime hour, not the rate.
If you answered 133
133 is 665 ÷ 5, ignoring the regular pay.
If you answered 14.78
14.78 is 665 ÷ 45, the average rate.
