AlgebraMediumAltitude from a linear boiling-point model
Algebra practice question
Water boils at 100°C at sea level, and the boiling point falls by 1°C for every 300 metres of altitude. At what altitude, in metres, does water boil at 95°C?
Answer: 1500
A fall of 5°C needs 5 × 300 = 1,500 metres.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 60
- 60 comes from 300 ÷ 5, dividing instead of multiplying.
- If you answered 300
- 300 is the altitude for a 1°C fall.
- If you answered 28500
- 28,500 comes from 95 × 300, using the boiling point instead of the drop.
