Geometry and TrigonometryVery hardHeight of water after pouring between containers
Geometry and Trigonometry practice question
A cylindrical jug with an inside radius of 2 centimetres is filled with water to a height of 10 centimetres. All the water is poured into an empty rectangular tank whose base is 8 centimetres by 5 centimetres. To the nearest tenth of a centimetre, what is the height of the water in the tank? Use 3.14 for π.
Answer: 3.1
The water's volume is π(4)(10) ≈ 125.6 cm³; divided by the base area of 40 cm² gives 3.14 cm, or 3.1.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 12.6
- 12.6 divides by 10 instead of 40.
- If you answered 1.6
- 1.6 uses π(2)(10) for the volume.
- If you answered 31.4
- 31.4 slips a decimal place.
