Problem-Solving and Data Analysis practice question
A box holds 8 cards numbered 1 through 8. One card is drawn at random. What is the probability that the number is either less than 4 or greater than 6?
Answer: 5/8 or 0.625
Less than 4: {1, 2, 3}, three cards. Greater than 6: {7, 8}, two cards. No overlap, so 5 of 8: 5/8.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 3/8
- 3/8 counts only the 'less than 4' cards.
- If you answered 1/4
- 1/4 counts only the 'greater than 6' cards.
- If you answered 6/64
- 6/64 multiplies the two probabilities, which is for 'and' with two draws, not 'or' with one.
