Text 1 The silver cup in the museum was a prize for the best ram at the 1820 fair, argues curator Leo Fenn, citing the inscription. Text 2 The inscription is genuine and Fenn reads it correctly. But the cup itself was made in 1790, thirty years before the fair, and its first engraving, now almost polished away, names a rowing race. Prizes were expensive, and the fair committee bought a second-hand trophy and had it re-engraved. The cup is a record of two contests, and of a committee's thrift.
