The following text is from a novel. Theo, a pianist, has stopped performing. People assumed Theo had lost his nerve, and he let them. The truth was less flattering to him and harder to explain: he had stopped hearing anything in the music that he had not already heard. The pieces still came out of his hands perfectly, and their perfection was the problem. He would rather be silent than be a machine that played Schubert.
