The dictionary's first editor collected words from volunteer readers, who sent slips of paper with a word, a quotation, and a date. Some sent thousands. One, a retired surgeon, sent so many that the editor eventually visited him and found that he had been working from a single shelf of books he had read and re-read for twenty years. The dictionary's coverage of those books is, to this day, oddly complete.
