Two explanations have been offered for the abandonment of the hilltop settlement around 1200. The first blames a drought recorded in tree rings from the region; the second, a shift in trade routes that left the settlement isolated. The tree-ring drought, however, lasted only four years, and settlements nearby survived it. The trade-route shift is harder to date but fits the slow decline seen in the pottery.
