A farmer sells eggs in boxes of 6 and boxes of 12. One morning she sold 20 boxes containing 180 eggs in all. How many boxes of 12 did she sell?
Answer: 10
With h boxes of 6 and d of 12, h + d = 20 and 6h + 12d = 180. Substituting h = 20 − d gives 120 + 6d = 180, so d = 10.
