Algebra practice question

A taxi charges a $15 flat fee plus $4 per kilometre. A passenger has $65. What is the greatest whole number of kilometres the passenger can travel?

Answer: 12

15 + 4k ≤ 65 gives 4k ≤ 50, k ≤ 12.5, so 12 kilometres.

Common wrong answers

If you answered 13
13 km would cost $67.
If you answered 16
16 divides 65 by 4, ignoring the flat fee.
If you answered 20
20 comes from (65 + 15)/4, adding the fee instead of subtracting.
