Algebra practice question

A gardener wants at least 200 plants for a border. She buys 14 trays that each hold 12 plants and makes up the rest with single pots. What is the least number of single pots she must buy?

Answer: 32

The trays give 14 × 12 = 168 plants. Then 168 + p ≥ 200 → p ≥ 32.

Common wrong answers

If you answered 31
31 leaves her one plant short.
If you answered 168
168 is the number of plants in the trays.
If you answered 200
200 is the target, not the shortfall.
