Geometry and TrigonometryEasy–MediumLength of a kite string
Geometry and Trigonometry practice question
A kite is flying 24 metres above a point on the ground that is 7 metres horizontally from the person holding the string. If the string is straight, how long is it, in metres?
Answer: 25
The height, the horizontal distance and the string form a right triangle with the string as hypotenuse: √(24² + 7²) = √(576 + 49) = √625 = 25.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 17
- 17 is 24 − 7. Lengths in a right triangle don't subtract; the squares combine.
- If you answered 31
- 31 is 24 + 7. The string is the hypotenuse, found with the Pythagorean theorem.
- If you answered 625
- 625 is 24² + 7²; take the square root for the length.
