Geometry and TrigonometryEasy–MediumArea of a square frame
Geometry and Trigonometry practice question
A square picture frame has an outer side of 12 inches and a uniform border 2 inches wide. What is the area, in square inches, of the border alone?
Answer: 80
Inner square side: 12 − 2(2) = 8. Border area = 144 − 64 = 80.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 64
- 64 is the inner opening, not the border.
- If you answered 100
- 100 subtracts a 10-inch inner square (taking 2 inches off one side only); the border is on both sides.
- If you answered 144
- 144 is the whole outer square.
