Perimeter is the total distance around the shape: two lengths plus two widths, 2(12) + 2(5) = 24 + 10 = 34.
Why the other answers are wrong

- 17 is one length plus one width. A rectangle has two of each, so double it.

- 24 is just the two lengths. The two widths, 5 + 5, must be added too.
