Geometry and TrigonometryHardDistance between two points
Geometry and Trigonometry practice question
In the xy-plane, what is the distance between the points (1, 2) and (7, 10)?
Answer: 10
The horizontal change is 7 − 1 = 6 and the vertical change is 10 − 2 = 8. These are the legs of a right triangle whose hypotenuse is the distance: √(6² + 8²) = √100 = 10.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 2
- 2 is the difference between the two changes (8 − 6). The distance combines them with the Pythagorean theorem.
- If you answered 14
- 14 is 6 + 8, adding the two changes. The distance is the hypotenuse, √(36 + 64), not the sum of the legs.
- If you answered 100
- 100 is 6² + 8², the square of the distance. Take the square root to get 10.
