Advanced MathVery hardSum of the y-coordinates of intersections

Advanced Math practice question

In the xy-plane, the graphs of y = x² − 4x + 3 and y = −x + 3 intersect at two points. What is the sum of the y-coordinates of those two points?

Answer: 3

Set equal: x² − 4x + 3 = −x + 3, so x² − 3x = 0 and x(x − 3) = 0. At x = 0, y = 3; at x = 3, y = 0. The y-coordinates sum to 3 + 0 = 3.

Common wrong answers

If you answered 0
0 is only one of the y-coordinates (at x = 3); the other, at x = 0, is 3.
If you answered 6
6 doubles the 3, or adds the y-intercepts of both equations; only one intersection has y = 3.
If you answered -3
−3 has the wrong sign; the y-values are 3 and 0.
