Advanced Math practice question

Which expression is equivalent to 3x(x − 2) − (x − 2)²?

  1. A. (x − 2)(2x + 2)Correct
  2. B. (x − 2)(2x − 2)
  3. C. (x − 2)(4x − 2)
  4. D. 2x² − 4

Answer: A. (x − 2)(2x + 2)

Both terms share (x − 2): (x − 2)[3x − (x − 2)] = (x − 2)(3x − x + 2) = (x − 2)(2x + 2).

Why the other answers are wrong

B. (x − 2)(2x − 2)
(2x − 2) forgets to distribute the minus sign to the −2 inside (x − 2).
C. (x − 2)(4x − 2)
(4x − 2) adds x instead of subtracting it: 3x + (x − 2).
D. 2x² − 4
2x² − 4 drops the middle term; expanding gives 2x² − 2x − 4.
