Advanced Math practice question

For x ≠ 0 and x ≠ −1, which expression is equivalent to 1/x + 1/(x + 1)?

  1. A. (2x + 1) / (x(x + 1))Correct
  2. B. 2 / (2x + 1)
  3. C. 1 / (x(x + 1))
  4. D. (2x + 1) / (x + 1)

Answer: A. (2x + 1) / (x(x + 1))

Use the common denominator x(x + 1). Rewrite each fraction: 1/x = (x + 1)/(x(x + 1)) and 1/(x + 1) = x/(x(x + 1)). Add the numerators: (x + 1) + x = 2x + 1, over x(x + 1).

Why the other answers are wrong

B. 2 / (2x + 1)
You added the numerators together and the denominators together. Fractions can't be added that way — they need a common denominator first.
C. 1 / (x(x + 1))
The denominator is right but the numerators were multiplied (1 × 1) instead of added after being rewritten: (x + 1) + x = 2x + 1.
D. (2x + 1) / (x + 1)
The numerator is right, but the common denominator is the PRODUCT x(x + 1), not just x + 1. The first fraction's x is missing from the bottom.
