Advanced MathVery hardPerimeter of a rectangle from its area and diagonal
Advanced Math practice question
A rectangle has an area of 60 square units and a diagonal of length 13 units. What is the perimeter of the rectangle?
Answer: 34
With sides l and w: lw = 60 and l² + w² = 169. Then (l + w)² = 169 + 120 = 289, so l + w = 17 and the perimeter is 34. (The sides are 5 and 12.)
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 17
- 17 is l + w, half the perimeter.
- If you answered 26
- 26 is twice the diagonal.
- If you answered 289
- 289 is (l + w)².
