Advanced MathVery hardLength from a diagonal two units longer
Advanced Math practice question
A rectangle has a width of 4 centimetres, and its diagonal is 2 centimetres longer than its length. What is the length of the rectangle, in centimetres?
Answer: 3
With length L, the diagonal is √(L² + 16) = L + 2. Squaring: L² + 16 = L² + 4L + 4, so 4L = 12 and L = 3.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 2
- 2 is the difference between the diagonal and the length.
- If you answered 5
- 5 is the diagonal, not the length.
- If you answered 6
- 6 comes from 4L = 24, forgetting to subtract the 4.
