Divers surveying the reef after the storm expected to find it stripped. Instead they found the coral largely intact, sheltered by the very sandbank the storm had built across the mouth of the bay. The bank had cut the reef off from the open sea for three weeks, and in that time the water inside had grown warm and still. The coral had survived the waves only to begin bleaching in the calm.
