Advanced Math practice question

Which expression is equivalent to (2x + 3)(x² − x + 1)?

  1. A. 2x³ + x² − x + 3Correct
  2. B. 2x³ − 2x² + 2x + 3
  3. C. 2x³ + 3x² − 3x + 3
  4. D. 2x³ + x² + x + 3

Answer: A. 2x³ + x² − x + 3

Multiply each term of the binomial by each term of the trinomial: 2x(x² − x + 1) = 2x³ − 2x² + 2x, and 3(x² − x + 1) = 3x² − 3x + 3. Add: 2x³ + x² − x + 3.

Why the other answers are wrong

B. 2x³ − 2x² + 2x + 3
This is only 2x times the trinomial, with the 3 tacked on. The 3 must multiply every term too.
C. 2x³ + 3x² − 3x + 3
This is only 3 times the trinomial, with 2x³ tacked on. The 2x must multiply every term.
D. 2x³ + x² + x + 3
The x terms are 2x − 3x = −x, not +x.
