Advanced MathHardGarden width from a path's area

Advanced Math practice question

A rectangular garden is twice as long as it is wide. A path 1 metre wide runs around the outside of the garden, and the path's area is 34 square metres. What is the width of the garden, in metres?

Answer: 5

With width w, the outer rectangle is (2w + 2) by (w + 2). Its area minus the garden's is 6w + 4 = 34, so w = 5.
