Advanced MathHardA difference of two products that is constant
Advanced Math practice question
For every value of x, the expression (x + 5)(x − 2) − (x + 1)(x + 2) has the same value. What is that value?
Answer: -12 or −12
(x + 5)(x − 2) = x² + 3x − 10 and (x + 1)(x + 2) = x² + 3x + 2. Their difference is −10 − 2 = −12.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 0
- 0 would need the constants to cancel too; only x² and 3x cancel.
- If you answered 12
- 12 has the wrong sign (subtracting in the wrong order).
- If you answered -8
- −8 comes from −10 + 2, adding the second constant instead of subtracting it.
