Advanced Math practice question
The functions f and g are defined by f(x) = 3x + 10 and g(x) = 2ˣ. What is the value of g(6) − f(6)?
Answer: 36
g(6) = 2⁶ = 64 and f(6) = 3(6) + 10 = 28. So g(6) − f(6) = 64 − 28 = 36. The exponential function starts smaller but overtakes the linear one.
Common wrong answers
- If you answered 28
- 28 is just f(6). Subtract it from g(6) = 64.
- If you answered −36
- That's f(6) − g(6). The question asks for g(6) − f(6), and g(6) = 64 is the larger value.
- If you answered −16
- −16 is 2(6) − 28: 2ˣ was read as 2x. The exponent makes it 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 · 2 = 64.
